After peeling the skin back towards the neck, the sternum, keel and associated musculature become visible. The abdominal wall is opened along the midline and then incised along both thoracic margins beside the ribs, allowing the abdominal cavity to be opened. The rib cage, together with the coracoid and clavicle bones, is cut on both sides using bone shears or strong scissors. The sternum is then lifted to permit full inspection of the thoracic and abdominal cavities, enabling visualisation of the internal organs.
