The bird exhibits gasping, conjunctivitis, and marked swelling of the head. Although avian metapneumovirus primarily induces upper‑respiratory disease, the severity and distribution of these lesions indicate a more complex aetiology. In broilers, this constellation of signs is more consistent with Swollen Head Syndrome (SHS), in which aMPV infection is complicated by secondary bacterial involvement, typically Escherichia coli.
